MPEG TO VCD : I got to setup a system that would duplicate my VHS files to MPEG andVCD format.What hardware and software that I need ?All I have now is a Pentium 233 system anf a CD-R.How do I input my audio and video in order for it to be converted tompeg or vcd file ?Hi, I was in the same boat recently..here is what I did to make VCD's...I havealready made about 6 without any problems..1. Get yourself a good Video capture card which can capture at at least SIFresolution (352 * 288 and 25 fps for PAL and 320 * 240 at 30fps for NTSC).OR better still get an Mpeg encoder card (Snazzi and Dazzle I heard areexcellent).2. Capture your Video by connecting your VCR to the Video card and for NTSCcapture at 320 * 240 at 29.97 fps (DO NOT capture at 30fps as the audiowill go out of synch!).3. Get yourself a software mpeg encoder like Xing (I use this). Conver thecaptured AVI file to Mpeg VCD system stream (Xing has options to do this).LSX V2.0 does not have a VCD specific output but is about 3 times as fastas Xing on my machine (Cyrix 166MX). Darimvision has VCD mpeg output andis about 2 times as fast as xing on my machine...these last 2 I have onlythe demo versions and am not willing to buy them just yet...Xing takesabout 8 times the input video time to convert to mpeg...so be prepared forall night disk activity when converting video! MPEG TO VCD : 4. Use Adaptec's Easy CD Deluxe to make a VCD using the mpegs created fromstep 3. You can also do this with HyCD as well as WinOnCD 3.5 I believe. Tips: AVI captures are monstrous...about 2.1MB / second of video! Plus youcannot capture more than 2GB files at a time..it cannot be read andconverted!I suggest you capture 320 * 240 at 14.98 fps and it will give you a decent33 minutes of video in a 2.0GB file. Ofcourse the resultant mpeg is alittle bit jerky..especially on fast and large moving objects, but ok onmost movies.I don't think so. It's much better to capture with a 0.6 to 1.1MB/sdatarate and CD Quality Audio for AVI MJPEG but mantain the 29.97fps.It's useless to store videos in MPEG-1 format which allows full videoframe rates if the source it's anything lower than 25fps (forPAL/SECAM) or 29.97fps (for NTSC). A VCD uses MPEG-1. Also, a VCD is burned to a CD-R, though a DVD-R drive can do it. You need to use Toast Titanium v5 to make a VCD. It should install a Toast VideoCD plug-in for iMovie and QuickTime Pro. However, iMovie won't work with MPEG. For QuickTime Pro, you may also need the MPEG plug-in to import the MPEG. From there export using the Toast VCD plug-in, then use that file to make a VCD with Toast. "VCD format" is not somethingvery special. 352x240 size MPEG 1 with A/V total bitrate of ~1330Kbit/s iswhat VCD requires. Higher bitrate you have, higher quality you get.Therefore, changing MPEG to VCD (in your case) means lowering bitrate, andit is essencially same as capturing directly to VCD format. No software /hardware can sustain the same quality when lowers the bitrate of MPEG.Anyway, Xing MPEG encoder can lower the bitrate of MPEG (I should sayre-encode?), but image quality is way too bad. You'd better capturedirectly to VCD format.Unfortunately, I don't see any way to improve the quality using Dazzle DVC.If you don't want speed, but want quality, get some kind of full size AVIcapture. You will need separate software MPEG encoder, but you can get verygood quality VCD. MPEG TO VCD : I'm hoping there's an easy answer to this somewhere. Something about the sound being muxedis the best I can find.I've tried a couple of different programs and did a lot of searching forsolutions. Most of them seem to involve using Windows-based programs.It just seems that there should be an easier way to do this on a Mac.If possible, a quick tutorial, or the names of some programs to helpwith this.I ran into this problem. I can't remember exactly what tools I used, but basically you have to 'demux' the MPEG (separate the audio from the video). You can then import the separate audio & video tracks into iMovie. (It might also be necessary to convert the resulting audio track into AIFF format before importing it into iMovie.)
