MPEG MOVIES : I messed about a bit with video capture on a Quadra 660AV. I made a coupleQuickTime movies from samples of _Miller's Crossing_ and _Blade Runner_ (Ithrew them all away, except for a recording of the "Danny Boy" sequence inMC. God, that was a really good movie!)Anyway, the best I could do was a movie exactly 4 minutes long (that was the"Danny Boy" movie), recorded at maybe 15-20 fps, and heavily compressed. Itonly runs half-screen, it looks pretty bad because of the compression, and it's18 megs big. I think that comes out to around 550 megs for a 120 minute movie,which is about CD-ROM size--but, remember, it won't look good unless you've ablazingly-fast computer (a Quadra 840AV, maybe) or are running it in a tinywindow.Conclusion--no way you could store a feature-length movie profitably on anything so convenient as a CD.-et (P. S. the video _playthrough_, however, looked just fine on the 14"monitor. In fact, it looked a lot better than any television, because thepixels are sharp and clean. Seems a pretty complicated way to watch a moviethough!) MPEG MOVIES : If you want to watch MPEG movies (and are in the continental US), get aDSS system. You can then watch MPEG movies 24 hours a day. I'mconstantly amazed at how good they usually look. MPEG MOVIES : I have a hauppauge tuner card in my Redhat 6.0 system that i've been usingXawTV with to watch TV. I've been messing around with the AVI captureutility 'streamer' to make movies. I'd like to compress these to MPEGmovies and downloaded 'mpeg2encode'.I have three problems... the first is I can't get sound with streamer. Ihear sound when it captures, but no sound when I view the AVI. Anyoneencounter this and fix it?The second problem is I can't play the AVI movies under Windows. I can playthem under Linux (w/o sound), but both realplayer and media player don'twork.The third problem is I can't figure out how to convert the AVI movies toMPEG in mpeg2encode. It wants a parameter file. I copied one of the sampleparameter files and they all want seperate files for each frame. Anyoneused this program before? MPEG MOVIES : BTW, once I get this all figured out I want to convert family video to MPEGmovies to ship downstate to the rest of the family. I have another littleone on the way (i.e. baby) and want to be setup in the next few weeks. I used mpeg2encode once myself. It was a very awkward thing touse and I didn't get sound either. However, you don't use it on AVIfiles. Looking in my old notes I captured video using something called'stream' (don't remember where I got it but probably can be located at). Now this streamutility captured individual frames and wrote them as files, it's VERYdisk intensive. From what I've heard, the way to go really is to usecompression a la mpeg, and it almost demands a special hardware cardto do it in real time and there's not much, if any support for the moreadvanced compression utilities in Linux right now. However, I capturedto a small window about 20 seconds of video, created an mp3 video fromit, and my brother was able to view it on his Windows95 (or 98 I don'tknow which) system. (My brother hasn't seen the light yet, but I'mworking on him.) Like I said, I didn't get sound, and basically abandonedthe whole business for the time being. MPEG MOVIES : I'm going to try using Real Producer and make realvideo clips out of it.They have version 6.0 for Linux and 6.1 for WinXX. Both are free. I playedwith the windows version and have had great success. It can even capture onthe fly. Very cool. No more recording HUGE AVI's and then re-encoding downto MPEG.I'm not married to MPEG, just small video clips. We'll see if the Linuxversion works with the Hauppauge card. It recommends the 2.2 kernel so itmust be pretty new. I wonder how compression compares between MPEG andRealvideo?352x240 MPEG-1 runs about 10 MByte/min. RealG2 "LAN" runs about 1.5 MByte/min for 230x240 size.A high quality video source captured at "high" resolution 704x480 and resized to 352x240 in a good encoder like Xing will give about the same quality as VHS tape when played back full screen.
