MPEG LAYER 3 : -The type of compression wav file standard supports is not set in stone, anyone, including you and I can create out own, if we wish, codec(compressor decompressor) or compression specification.-As soon are we install a certain codec on a computer we will be able toplay back (or even encode, if coded supports this) a wav file createdwith the said codec.-Win98 comes with a codec for playing back MPEG Layer-3 encoded wavfiles. This means that any application that understands wav files shouldunderstand wav files encoded using MPEG Layer-3. (see point above)When I try to use a MPEG Layer-3 wav file (created from a mp3) inPremiere it does not work.I'm simply wondering if anybody was able to do such a thing (use a MPEGLayer-3 wav file in Premiere). No, but I would use it too if someone would write it. You can use an mp3 asa BGSOUND SRC in an IE5 html page. It plays through explorer without avisable player. Thus, my speculation is that sopmeone will write a pluginsoon. MPEG LAYER 3 : Yes, I have, as an experiment. I used the Fraunhofer program to outputa .wav instead of an .mp3. It works, but the additional processingtime when building a movie is not worth the space savings for myparticular authoring needs. I already have gigs and gigs of video--whywould I want to save space when a full HOUR of sound is only 650M?If the sound do be used is already compressed using MPEG Layer-3, say a mp3file, it is just as easy to convert the mp3 to a MPEG Layer-3 wav as todecompress it into a uncompressed wav. The former approach saves hd space.I'm short in that department, and so I thought I would give it a try.You mentioned the the rendering takes longer but if one wants to use a mp3, onehas to take the time to decompress it sooner or later. My way I save some hdspace and archiving space. Well, I would it the damn thing would work for me.Do you know who's codec (Microsoft's or Fraunhofer's) ends up being used todecompress the file when Premiere renders. I'm using the MS one, maybe that'smy problem. MPEG LAYER 3 : I've just sat through the ravings of one of my Microsoft warpedco-workers as he told me about a new application (win32 only) thathandles mpeg layer 3 sound files. I'm not up on all of the details ofmpeg layer 3 but it looks like this allows phenominal compression ofsound files, my co-worker claims to have around 12 cd's compressedonto a single jazz disk at home. Is anyone working on this for linux?Chuck Mattern wrote:] I've just sat through the ravings of one of my Microsoft warped] co-workers as he told me about a new application (win32 only) that] handles mpeg layer 3 sound files. Is anyone working on this for linux? There is a complete suite of utilities for encoding and decoding MPEGlayer 3 (mp3) files under Linux. MPEG LAYER 3 : For thoss who dont yet know, MP3 is a highly compressed audio formattailored to the human hearing; though the compression is lossy, thereproduced audio is hardly distinguishable from the original (for myuntrained ears at least). A typical song compressed to mp3 format takesup just over 4 megs. Compression ratios (versus the uncompressedCD-quality bitmap) are on the order of 12:1. There are several decoders (for playing mp3's). I am using onecalled 'mpg123', it is fast and stable. The original distribution pointis: A Debian package is available, but not in the stable distribution. If you are using Debian wrote:I haven't done too much testing yet (I lost my .mp3 collection, dangit), butI've heard amp is faster and more stable than mpg123. There are a fewothers (splay and maplay3 are the only two that come to mind). Not even that :( It's only free for 30 days, and then stops working. MPEG LAYER 3 : I hope to work on one. I've heard that a lib that comes with splay canencode MP3s, but I've been too busy to test this, and I'm kinda doubtful, anyway. I think the best thing to do would be to take the sources from allthe GPL'ed MP3 players, combine the best elements of all of them, and make astandard MP3 decoding library. Once that's done, I'd like to add encodingcapabilities to it, too (unless splay already can).Joel Hardy wrote:Well, if you follow this link: you might find something like a serial number unlocking the crippleware?I didn't think this was possible since Fraunhoffer-IIS hold the license to this technology and they dont distribute the source. But according to some threads in the Amiga Audio group people are talking about using this technology in Module files (the suggestion was shot down BTW because a module plays the samples at different frequencies and ruin the masked acoustic effects that mp3 comression is based on)
