The Weirdoe-mail: homepage: Unless you mean multiplexing several elemental streams into a systemstream, it is very difficult, if not entirely impossible, to write a program toconcatenate independently encoded elemental video streams that workswithout decoding & recoding the streams:1. MPEG frames are not always independent; in the case of "normal" bitstreams, predicted (P) and bi-directionally predicted (B) frames are usually present, which are stored as the difference between previous (or next) and current frames, so it isn't possible to just go in & hack out frames, or add on frames in a willy-nilly fashion. You either need to use all I-frames, or use closed group-of-pictures and edit on GOP boundaries. MPEG JOINER : 2. Hardware decoders require very precise buffer regulation, since they have fixed performance rates (and usually fixed memory sizes & bitrates). Unless the bitstream was encoded with fixed picture sizes (which is usually not the case), it is not possible to substitute one frame for another, without affecting the buffer regulation, which will lead to eventual over- or under- flow problems. Software decoders are more tolerant, but in any case, this will lead to synchronization errors with audio.With this knowledge in mind, I have, on occasion, truncated bitstreams at theend of a GOP, or started them after a known GOP, using standard binary fileediting tools. If the GOPs are closed, you can trim the EOS off the first stream& the header off the second one, adjust VBV values to reflect reality, thenconcatenate the partial pieces. A good knowledge of the MPEG elemental video layer is needed, if you are to do it successfully. MPEG JOINER : Does anybody know of a utility running under MacOS that joins MPEG files, ie a Mac equivalent of Camel's MPEGJoin or Mpg.join?The reason I am asking is that when I use the above utilities, on a Win2K machine to join MPEG files, the finished product is not played properly by Quicktime 5.0.1 (on both the Win2k and MacOS 9.1 platforms). QT will only play the the first file irrespective of how many others have been joined together. Windows Media Player running under Win2k can play the whole file. This is a bummer because QT (IMHO) is a far superior player to WMP. I have run repeated tests on both tools using different input files, but the results are consistent, QT5 doesn't play the whole joined file, just the first segment.-- Do I dare disturb the Universefor in a minute comes time for decisions and revisionsthat a minute will reverse
