If you're using a PowerMac, just drop the file ontoMoviePlayer, and it should play just fine. In fact, Sparkle isn't neededat all on a PM.If you're using a 68k Mac, you just can't play muxed MPEGs. The guy whowrote Sparkle was hired by Apple to write MPEG support into QuickTime,so he never updated it.There *is* a way to watch the movie with sound though. It'll take awhile, so sit back and relax. I hope you've got some hard drive spaceand time to spare... ;) MPEG FILE : First, drop the file onto the program MPEGSplit, which came withSparkle. A dialog box will open, asking you where to save the pieces.Pick one out, and the program will start working. It may not look likeit's doing anything for a while, especially if you've got a large file.Eventually though, you'll probably get an error message, and be told toclick anywhere with your mouse. The program will quit, and you'll have acouple files in the folder you specified: one ending with .m1v (thevideo file), one ending with .m1a (the audio file), and possibly a fewothers which you don't need.Okay. Now, double click on the .m1v file, which will load it intoSparkle. This is a video only MPEG file...feel free to watch it, just tomake sure it looks okay, and isn't corrupted somehow. When you're ready,select Export from the File menu, and choose QuickTime Movie in thedialog box. If you want, select a compression method, and sit back whilethe file gets written into QuickTime format. MPEG FILE : In the Sparkle manual, it says that if you name the MPEG movie and its soundfile a certain way, Sparkle will play the movie while playing the sound fromthe sound file. Check the manual for specific instructions.There's no need to use convert the sound to System 7 sound, for Sparkle savesthe sound as AIFF, which MoviePlayer recognizes (From QuickTime 2.5 and on,which is what you have, right?)If you are going to view MPEG files frequently, I suggest you to buy apowermac; 68k is just really too slow to view them. Or another option is tobuy a video card which accelerate the playback of MPEG movies. However, Idon't know if there is any for NuBus (there's plenty for PCI, but that'spowermac only...)True, but you still have to split the MPEG, and convert the audio filefrom MPEG audio to an AIFF file. Plus, it's just messier to have to dealwith two files instead of a single movie. MPEG FILE : MPEGSplit simply divides the file into an MPEG video file, and an MPEGaudio file. You still have to convert it to AIFF or System 7, whicheverway you choose to do it.I don't think there are any for NuBus Macs. Plus, not all 68k Macs*have* NuBus. Some (like my old one) have PDS slots, which definatelydon't have anything like that.yea, you're best off to buy a PowerMac. But other than that, it worked according toplan.My big question now is: I've been told repeatedly in this thread that Ineed a powermac with Quicktime 2.5 or 3.0, which is actually what I have(Performa 6200 w/QT 2.5). Yet my movieplayer does not recognize MPEGfiles at all. Is the answer to upgrade to QT 3.0? Probably I'll justupgrade the whole thing to OS8 eventually anyway (which I'm assuming hasQT 3.0, correct?). MPEG FILE : I am running IDL5.1 under Windows NT 4.0 and am trying to create an MPEGfile. I have a set of images which I can load and play using XINTERANIMATE.Everything looks fine. I then push the "Write MPEG" button. Again, everythinglooks ok with the file being written to disk. However, when I try to play thefile back using a QuickTime Movie Player, I get an error saying it cannotopen the file. When I try to insert the MPEG file into a Microsoft Powerpoint97 Slide presentation, I get a message saying Powerpoint found an error thatit can't correct. I've also tried creating the MPEG file using the MPEG_OPEN,MPEG_PUT, MPEG_SAVE, and MPEG_CLOSE procedures as described in the IDL5.1help and I still have no success reading the file back. Has anyonesuccessfully created an MPEG file under IDL5.1 directly or usingXINTERANIMATE?Finally, I've tried creating an MPEG file by EXACTLY running the example givenin the IDL5.1 help for XINTERANIMATE (which uses the IDL bundled abnorm.datdata). Again, it seems to create an MPEG file (76 KB) when I press the "WriteMPEG" button but I have no luck reading it with the two MPEG reading capableprograms mentioned above. Am I missing something?
