MPEG DECODER : Yes it does do hardware decoding, that's why it is a card with MPEG2 decoderchip. Also, I've had the card working in a Pentium 133 without any problems, playing back high quality MPEG2. It also has the benefit of being able toplay MPEG2 streams os up to 15Mbits/sec, something most software decoderscan't do.A) How do you know it does hardware decoding? It doesn't say so ontheir website.B) Are you sure you the REALmagic Xcard? Their website claims it willnot be available until March 28.The REALmagic Xcard does MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video decoding inhardware. The other Sigma cards only do MPEG-2 video decoding inhardware. If the card uses a MPEG decoding chip, it's a pretty safe bet that thedecoding is in hardware...-- Keith Jack author: Video Demystified (new 3rd edition now available!) And, other than simply trusting the word of anonymous people on theinternet who I don't know and have never met, how does one determinewhether or not the card has an MPEG decoding chip? Maybe you have aURL for a document on Sigma's website? Something like that? MPEG DECODER : I believe when you go to SigmaDesigns web site the first thing that pops upis a picture of their new MPEG decoder chips. Why else would you buy a PCIdecoder card for decoding MPEG2 if it was not a hardware decoder? Unless youjust have to fill a PCI slot. The electronics on the Hollywood+ card arevery similar to what most DVD players use, so it's safe to say that it's ahardware decoder. Also, while playing MPEG2 though it, my CPU only showsabout 8% usage. But then again maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's just a PCI cardwith nothing on it and the decoding process is really magic?A good question. I wouldn't. That's the whole point of my inquiry. But, I bet plenty of people would. The remote control interfacealone would be worth it for many. Here's an equally good question: Why would a vendor market a cardfor hardware MPEG decoding, and then not say it's a hardware MPEGdecoder in it's sales pitch? MPEG DECODER : I have posted a DOS MPEG decoder/player to alt.binaries.pictures.utilities.Here is a short description and some technical information, taken from theaccompanying documentation: - decodes (nearly) the full MPEG video standard (I,P,B frames, frame size up to at least 352x240 supported) - saves decoded sequence in 8 or 24bit raw file for later display - several dithering options: ordered dither, Floyd-Steinberg, grayscale - very compact (small code / small data models, 16 bit arithmetic) - real time display of the raw file by a separate player for VGA and many Super-VGAsThe player is a rather straightforward implementation of the MPEG spec [1].The IDCT is based on the Chen-Wang 13 multiplication algorithm [2](not quite the optimum, I know). Blocks with not more than eight non-zerocoefficients use a non-separated direct multiply-accumulate 2D-IDCT(sounds great, doesn't it?), which turned out to be faster than a 'fast'algorithm in this (quite common) case. Dithering is pretty standard. Main MPEG DECODER : I have tried Adaptec Easy CD Creator only because it is included in theVideOH! package. Moreover, it included a software called VCD Creator. It canproduce all ncessary files for making VCD from MPEG files automatically. The quality of VideOH! is acceptable in displaying VCD in my 29" TV using anormal VCD player. I don't know why someone would pay $2xxx to buy otherbrands MPEG decoder like Snazzi or Dazzle. It you want quality display, you should not buy MPEG I decoder. You need aMPEG II (i.e. DVD) decoder with DV input; but it will be very expensive -more than $4000!! And it is very time-consuming!! Some other capture cardlike Pinnacle DV200 may not capture video in MPEG output. It captures AVIformat and allows you to make good your video files by something likerendering. But firstly it is very time consuming and secondly you must havea very big harddisk space - at least 40 GB for editing work. MPEG DECODER : IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PACKARD BELL INTERNAL HARDWARE MPEG DECODERSPLEASE RESPOND!!I have a Packard Bell P133 Axcel computer with VGA graphics built intothe motherboard. An MPEG 1 hardware decoder is supposed to be integrated with the VGAvideo per the writing on the computer case. However, the computer was ademo model and they gave me the wrong PBell manuals and documentation -MPEG is not mentioned anywhere.I have several SOFTWARE-based MPEG decoders on my system, but it is myunderstanding that HARDWARE-based MPEG decoders are far superior. Iwant to utilize the built-in hardware MPEG decoder, but I can't figureout how to do it.Running the QuickTime 32-bit setup from the control panel, it reads "nointernal hardware support available". Now, if there IS an MPEG hardwaredecoder installed, it SHOULD read something like "QuickTime Support: 8-bit palletized pixels; DCI primary surface internal support".
