MPEG 4 : I am kinda new to desktop video, but all I been hearing lately on this NGand other sites is about the new MPEG-4 codec. Is this the next big thingin desktop video? I heard it's possible to squeeze a 2.5 hr. DVD movie ontoa 700MB CD-R with no loss of quality. Same thing with still images & audio.Wow....really true? This may be the big break we need to watch broadcastvideo over DSL & cable....or at least until we all have 500 Mbps satelliteinternet service.However, it seems like the hardware requirements for encoding MPEG-4 ispretty hefty. Anyone out there have a good enough system for reasonableencoding times?Totally wrong. There is NO WAY to reduce the file size without losingquality (except uncompressed -> Huffyuv) even if you have super-duperediting system.It is just a way of video. And, it is just a matter of how much qualitydrop is visible.Due to DVD's high quality, quality drop is not very visible. But, there ISquality loss. MPEG 4 : But it IS true you can put ~2.5 hours of video in one CD. And, this is truefor all the available codecs.Quality won't be good though.Hefty system? Not at all. Get cheap TV tuner, and you are set.You can make realtime MPEG-4. However, you will need fairly fast CPU forthis, though.But, making MPEG-4 does NOT make all the same quality. Depends on how youmake, quality will be all different.And, be warned that except MS ASF MPEG-4 codec, all others available for noware illegally hacked codecs.I don't recommend you to use this except for personal use.This is the reason why currently no hardware solution is available forMPEG-4.I'd say MPEG4 is probably the absolute best in video compression at thistime. An MPEG-4 encoded AVI offers the same quality as an MPEG-2 encodedVOB at 1/5th the file size (bitrate). For example, the quality of a DVDusing 7500kbps MPEG-2 video is very hard to differentiate from a 1500kbpsMPEG-4 AVI, provided the crispness on the MPEG-4 AVI is set to 100% and thekeyframe interval is set for 1 second. Live capture to AVI using MPEG-4does not give a great image quality by any means, except possibly on a dualThunderbird 1.2GHz system with fully 3dnow-optimized encoding. MPEG 4 : At 1/10th the size of MPEG-2 encoded material, 750kbps MPEG-4 video offers agood quality output, but definitely inferior to DVD quality.Well, MPEG-2 is a lossy compression mechanism to begin with. There's justso much bits thrown at it that it looks really good. 7500kbps is a wholecrapload of bits per second for video. You can get quality that isextremely close to 7500kbps MPEG-2 using 1500kbps MPEG-4 compression. Usingan uncompressed source would provide even better quality MPEG-4 at 1500kbpscompared to 7500kbps MPEG-2.Well, I wouldn't argue about MPEG-4, since I feel the same. It has prettygood quality, bit better than MPEG-1 and 2.Here, you might want to ask why I saidy "bit" better...First of all, your comparison is wrong. DVD's quality is good because it isprofessionally made.So, some compression doesn't make visible quality loss.Why you get a good quality at 1500Kbit/s with MPEG-4 when you rip DVD isprimarily because it was DVD.Not because it was MPEG-4 format you used. MPEG 4 : Then, you might want to ask why DVD uses such high bitrate.In that case, I want to ask why you make 1500Kbit/s video instead of6000Kbit/s. I guess is because of the file size, right?8) My final note is...8) I don't think the "BEST CODEC" can be determined by the quality only.8) MPEG-4 is currently the least compatible type. There certainly is a Mac and linux MPEG-4 codec. Check out: MPEG 4 : I've been using it under windows just fine. I don't do any videowork with Linux, but others seem to be using DIVX;-) without anyproblems. I suppose I can try it on one of my G4's tomorrow, butI don't see any reason why it wouldn't work there too.For me, since disk space is so cheap, I normally don't even botherwith compression.
