MPEG 2 : Although I only own the panasonic encoder, I have made short MPEG2 withligos demo (does not do interlaced fields so I use a deinterlacedsource), BBMPEG, TMPEG. At the bit rates needed to be compliant withSVCD or XVCD, the panasonic when played to the TV out of my ATI videocard (using the DVD palyer) is clearly better than the MPEG 2 filesplayed whether they are interlaced or not. There is blockiness whenlooked closely at the TV set with the MPEG 2 files but not present onthe panasonic encoder either at 352 x240 or 480x480. If you raise thebit rate to that similar to DVD with the MPEG encoders, the imageimproves greatly. THe higher resolution 480x480 is sharper than the352x240. This is why I would suggest using the panasonic at this timefor any low bit rate project. In the future when it will be reasonableto author DVD at high bit rates( greater than 5000), then a MPEG2encoder will be necessary. MPEG 2 : If you do not deinterlace when using MPEG1, the picture quality to TValso suffers due to loss of movement between fields and interlacingartifacts such as combing/flickering.The question I have is how to make a MPEG 1 file into a compatable SVCDMPEG to be burnt unto a CDR. BBMPEG's SVCD fix program only works withMPEG2 and if you try to remux using BBMPEG2, it will not work with MPEG!files. Supposedly, SVCD will allow the use of MPEG1 or 2 files. The key is staying within the criteria so that in the future the CDRsmade will play on various standalone players so they can be shared or ifyour player breaks, then a new player will play it. Since XVCD is not astandard and probably will never be a standard, making these CDRs has itrisks. Presently, I been staying with standard VCD 2.0 until I can sortthis out (I maximize the video rate by reducing the audio rate). MPEG 2 : Another question I would like to ask would be the best way todeinterlace. VirtualDub works well with smart deinterlace but therendering time is long. Does the deinterlace option in the panasonicencorder appears to only ignore one field if it is used. I would like toknow what happens if you encode a full frame (2 fields) into a MPEG1full frame size without the deinterlace option. Will it average it intoalmost a deinterlaced image or not??? Thank you.Could someone here perhaps recommend the best and most cost effectiveway I could go about creating one of these Video CDs?I need to do a video project for a client of mine that's intended to bedistributed via CD-ROM, and I'd like to get the best quality possible,.. yet ensure that everyone will be able to experience smooth,non-stuttering playback when viewing the video from directly off theCD-ROM. MPEG 2 : Here is the video editing & encoding software I currently have that I'mthinking I can use for this project:1) Adobe Premiere 5.1c2) Panasonic MPEG Encoder version 2.213) Virtual Dub 1.2aI have the capability to capture full-frame (720x480), full-motion(29.97fps) video using a DV/firewire kit (Digital Origin's MotoDV), --but I'm thinking that an MPEG file of this frame size and frame ratemight be a bit too processor intensive for some folks' systems.1) What would be the best happy medium in regards to frame-size andframe-rate for my exported "to-be-encoded" AVI file, .. to ensure that*most* processors and CD ROM drives will be able to handle smooth,non-stuttering playback?2) Should I de-interlace the to-be-encoded AVI file using AdobePremiere, Virtual Dub, .. or the Panasonic MPEG encoder?3) I've noticed that after de-interlacing (I tried it using VirtualDub) .. that my video looked a tad blurry. What kinds of filters wouldbe best for me to apply to compensate for this, . aside from "sharpen",if any? MPEG 2 : 4) What would be the most ideal settings in the Panasonic MPEG encoder(specifically the kbps values), .. to ensure that *most* processors andCD ROM drives will be able to handle smooth, non-stuttering playback?5) What software can I use (Win98 platform) to create one of these videocds? Are there any freeware or shareware programs that I can use? Ifso, where can I download one from?6) Do users need to install any special program or codec on their PCs inorder to view the VCDs? If so, .. what is required?7) Are these VCDs typically cross platform? Or do they only work onWintel-based machines?VBR has _everything_ to do with saving space unless your particularapplication either has hardware support for true variable bitrates, ora minimum buffer as a requirement of the specification. You can view this either way. If you clamp the _average_ bitrate oversome specific time period to a specific, the quality can be higherthan CBR for the same storage, depending on content. But you can onlydo this if the supply stream is variable. Or if you have a bufferdepth that's used to keep the media feed (CD, DVD, RF) at a constantrate.
