If you have raw (ie. codeccompressed) DV, you talk about 3 MB/s. When compressed to, say,sorenson, you talk 30 KB/s. The compression takes a while, granted, butyou can do that overnight. The trick is to make a new movie, import allthe other movies you want to compress in this single movie and save itdependent on the imported movies. The new movie will be a few KB, as itonly consists of pointers. Now, at night, open the movie and export itas sorenson and go to sleep. Next morning your sorenson is there. MOV TO AVI : Your question really seems to be 'what is the best codec for high quality &low data rate?'The answer is low data rate always gives up quality, though some codecs likeSorensen (for QT) are pretty darn good. Balance data rate against broadplatform compatibility and you may well end up going with MPEG -- TMPGEncwill deliver quality mpegs from mov source clips. Pick the highest datarate you can live with.There is no benefit -- nor loss either -- to switching from mov files to avifiles; both are dependent on the codec you chose, and all are dependent onthe data rate you select. Some (older) codecs are better on slowmachines -- Cinepak, for instance -- but give up quality. Other codecsmaintain quality, like DV, but are fixed at data rates that generate bigfiles. Either codec can be either mov or avi. MOV TO AVI : There's a couple of datatypes I've been trying to find for.avi and .mov. Hell I don't even know what they stand for, I just know that they are either files like MPEGs and maybe even real audio.All I really want to know is can I convert them or be able to viewthem or hear them? .AVI are PC format sound/anim files, and .MOV are Apple Quicktimeanimations. Both are pretty much crossplatform now for those two machines.I used CyberQT and CyberAVI (when I had a working graphic board) which Ilaunched from ToolManager and my dir util with ease. There are otherplayers, some CLI-based. GUI-front ends. There may be functioningdatatypes... I've seen some posted. But these utils worked so good and arefreeware, IIRC.BTW, I used AmiPEG for MPegs... also a nice prg and supports CyberGFX... MOV TO AVI : You can play them with video&sound with CyberAVI, or CyberQT.
