FREE DIVX MOVIES : I don't want to use Kazaa.Or anything like that. Can I download movies anywhere else? How do I get into an FTP?"Stefan Custers" wrote in message...Go to Blockbuster, rent a DVD, and rip it.On Tue, 6 May 2003 18:51:59 +0100, "Your Arse" wrote:I just find it interesting how things have changed with "recorded" media. Back when recording music off the radio on to cassette tape (or duping a friends tape for your car) or duping VHS movies was commonplace and widely accepted. My vhs/beta (remember beta?) library is huge, and I probably wouldn't have bought a single one of those movies. Taped off TMN(movie channel in Canada), from rentals, or just reg TV.Just downloading movies. Well, yeah you haven't paid anything for it. Renting a DVD and ripping? I honestly don't see how that differs from how people used to rent a VHS movie and record it. Of course, ripping a rental DVD for personal use is considered evil and illegal these days. FREE DIVX MOVIES : Glad to say I'm a proud member of Columbia House. They just never really go away.I have ripped VOBs from a DVD to my computer to watch later if I hireda DVD and didn't have time to watch it. I didn't keep the VOBs after Iwatched it as they are HUGE and I don't want all that space being usedup. I do not think there is anything wrong in doing that. £3.75 for a1 night rental of a DVD is a lot of money if you rent more than once aweek. I am just making sure I get value for money :)-- Morgan Pugh *Whoa....man, at that price I wouldn't feel value for money until I rippedit, DivXed it, and passed it onto my friends! That's about $10.00 Australiandollars (I'm in Australia). $10.00 AUD here will usually get you 2 newreleases and 2-3 weeklies. Down the road I can rent new release DVDs for$3.50 AUD (no free weeklies) - which would be about £1.50. However, mostshops are $7.00 AUD (£2.80) for a new release and one weekly. FREE DIVX MOVIES : I was ridiculed a while back fro buying a DIVX machine. here is a little storyfor you. I bought my DIVX box for 400.00. When DIVX died I received a 100.00rebate. At this point I had watched a few DIVX movies and countless DVD's. Now I purchase the movie "matrix" on DVD. it won't play on my machine (as wellas many other DVDonly boxes). I have an ESP i purchased at CC with my DIVXbox. I bring my machine in to get it fixed. They decide not to fix but togive me a new machine. I pick out a SONY DVD box w/digital decoder for theoriginal purchase price of 400.00 of my old box. So here is what I got for my400.00 dollars that I spent 1 1/2 years ago. 1. My original Zenith DIVX/DVDbox that I used for 1 1/2 years. 2. A brand new Sony DVD box for no extracharge, (and I am sure this box is quite better than any DVD box I could havepurchased for 400.00 when I purchased my first machine). 3. A 100.00 rebatefrom DIVX (can't complain aboiut free money). 4. 10 various free DVD moviesbecause of the SONY box I got. 5. 13 Free Rentals at Blockbuster. 6. 10 Freeretals at Netflix. 7. 5 free DIVX movies. 8. Another 3 year ESP from CC atno extra charge. I think I did ok for the 400.00 I spent 1 1/2 years ago. Sofor all the people who ridiculed me and tried to make me feel like an idiot forpurchasing a DIVX machine, I will use a phrase from my favorite comedian EddieIzzard, "&^%$ Off". FREE DIVX MOVIES : That's like someone saying they got good use of their car for ayear and a half and then someone ripped it off and they bought abetter one with their insurance money. Is that supposed to makeDIVX "good" somehow? People make money off of bad things all thetime; that doesn't make something bad good.Just curious though, how much are those 5 free DIVX movies worth nowconsidering they cannot be played on a non-DIVX machine (your Sony)? Listing those as a gain for your $400 is like listing the free phonecord you got because you forgot to repackage it with the returned DIVXmachine. Actually, the phone cord is worth more the the DIVX moviesIMO. 8-)I didn't know boxes could play DVD's.. is it made outof cardboard?I think Circuit City has handled the demise of DIVX better than most of usthought they would. For that they deserve credit. But face it, you gotlucky. The fact that you ended up getting a nice DVD player for $300 isgreat, considering you could have been stuck with a very low quality playerfor $400. FREE DIVX MOVIES : But does this mean DIVX was a good idea? Does this mean your first player waseven a passable Open DVD player? No, of course not. It sounds like you'restill trying to convince us you made the right decision way back when. Doesthis mean you knew DIVX was going to die and you'd get a better player out ofthe deal? Hmm, I bought a Pioneer DV-414 from CC in January for $279, and, well, I haven't had to return it, service it, or otherwise worry aboutanything. It just works. Who made the smarter buying decision?Dave, I really am happy with Circuit City for how they've handled what couldhave been a gigantic mess. But don't turn around and claim you still came outahead of those of us who knew what the smart move was all along. Sheesh, justadmit it, you made a bad decision! You'll feel better afterwards, I promise.
