DVD TO MPEG : I know. Several years ago I used an service bureau that had anexcellent hardware Sony MPEG-1 encoder. None of the software-basedencoders at that time could touch the quality of the video itproduced.Assuming I use the best quality encoding possible, which format wouldyou recommend to fit 22 minutes of video on a 3" disc, when the playeris an SVCD unit? VCD, XVCD or SVCD?I personally think it comes down to VCD versus XVCD, because I find thatXVCD can usually beat SVCD.With a 3" disc you have a maximum of about 185 MB of data, or about 8.5MB/min for your 22 min video. Depending on what you're targeting,that's pretty low for 720x480 (NTSC) XVCD -- I normally like to have10-11 MB/min when I'm targeting standalone players with video of typicalmotion and complexity -- but it may be OK if: (a) you don't care aboutstandalone players, which lets you push the minimum down to 0 with nopadding; and/or (b) your motion and complexity are low-to-moderate. DVD TO MPEG : I'd start by trying 640x480 (assuming NTSC for computer playback only)encoding with TMPGEnc at CQ 50-60 with audio at 192 Kbps, ideally at thelowest possible frame rate (i.e., 24/25 fps). As a check, I'd alsoencode 320x240 at CQ 100 with audio at 224 Kbps. I'd then compare thetwo, and go with what looked (and sounded) best. (If you're alsotargeting TV playback, then use resolutions of 720x480 and 352x240.)If it's straight, compatible MPEG-2, I very, very much doubt it. Thereare plenty of CODECs that run on the Equator chips (pretty cool chips,but not cheap) that can do better than MPEG-2. The latest On2 CODECclaims broadcast quality as low as 1Mb/s; when I was in the business,I didn't see that one, but the predecessor was doing SVHS quality atthose rates. Now, I know the DVD Forum is looking at "MPEG-2 with enhancementlayer" as one of the contenders for HD-DVD. They could be talkingabout that, but it's not really applicable, it doesn't play back onexisting MPEG-2 players. DVD TO MPEG : What I do know is that, if they really do have superior MPEG-2encoding, real MPEG-2, then Hollywood will be using their stuffeverywhere in six months. Between the demand for higher qualityencoding, and the crunch to stuff more onto a DVD, any technology thatreally doubles or quadruples (real MPEG-4 Simple Profile could somevery close to quadrupling the storage time of a DVD at the sameperceived quality, at least based on the research I did at my previoustwo companies, both of which were involved in broadband video). They apparently don't go very low bitrate, or they could provide anon-line demo. But they could anyway: put up original source files andMPEG-2 files for download, and let the video community look 'em over. The people here were very helpful,so I'll return the favor.The VOB files on your DVD are as you say: multiple audio streams, views,etc. However, once you rip them to your hard drive using, say...SmartRipper, they are MPG files. This is because with SmartRipper, youselect the audio stream you want. It is then "extracted" to your hard drive(in one or more VOB files). DVD TO MPEG : Once ripped to your hard drive, you can play these VOB files directlythrough your software DVD player. What's more, if you rename them .MPG, youcan play them through WMP or QuickTime (if you have the QT MPEG codec).Now, knowing this, I think it would be fairly easy (under DOS) to join theripped VOBs together:Then you will have one MPG file with the complete movie (or as much of it asyou ripped).This file has gone through no decoding/re-encoding process, so it is theoriginal DVD quality (with an equally big file size!!)The audio is extracted during the DVD2AVI process, not by SmartRipper.So... how does your DVD play or MPEG software know whick audio to play whenyou play a ripped VOB as an MPG?FlyByKnightWho still has know idea why this works... it just does.You can always "demux" the VOB MPEG data into separate streams. Thevideo stream for each angle, and each audio stream, are interleaved inthe VOB. Demuxing pulls them apart into separate MPEG files. So youcould strip out the angles and audio tracks you don't want, and thenre-mux a single audio and video track. (there is plenty of freesoftware for muxing/demuxing)
