How many movies are available NOW for DIVX and how many movies areavailable NOW for DVD? Just compare the raw numbers. Do you think thatDIVX will catch up?2. Given that movies are an international business and upwards of 50%of a film's revenue can come from outside the U.S., how many studioswill be willing to give exclusive distribution rights to DIVX for USdistribution and exclusive non-US distribution rights to DVD (giventhat DIVX is a US only pay per view scheme so far)? DVD TO DIVX : My guess is that (a) DIVX cannot possibly catch up in popularity giventhe success of DVD in the past year, and (b) DIVX's targeting a USonly distribution scheme with exclusive deals doesn't make sense --even Disney will be releasing A BUG'S LIFE on standard DVD. If DIVX cannot count on exclusive titles, if it is unlikely it willcatch up to DVD any time soon -- then why not invest now in standardDVD? You don't need a phone line and the selction of titles is greatNOW. Plus, you can rent standard DVD. At a nearby rental shop lastweek, for example, I rented for 5 nights THE EXORCIST, MATCHMAKER, andARMAGEDDON. For less than $10 total. This is a good deal!As a movie lover, I would be reluctant to invest in DIVX since it willprobably fail leaving me with unusable titles which have less featuresthan standard DVD titles. If DIVX's only advantage over standard DVD is that in the U.S. a fewblockbuster titles will be available a couple of months in advanceover DVD, then I do not think that will even be enough to cover thecosts of running the DIVX operation, and CC will have to continuepumping money into the scheme, which its stockholders will inevitablerefuse to do. Again, you are left with unusable titles when thescheme fails. DVD TO DIVX : And as far as the argument goes that "even if DIVX fails you stillhave a DVD player" --- well, if someone from Circuit City actuallyuses that as a sales ploy, you KNOW that they have thrown in the toweland you should only buy the player if they cut the price below, say,$100, so you can play standard DVD only.Also, consider the fact that online DVD retailers have occasionalsales. Recently I bought a copy of BLADE RUNNER for $10, plus $3shipping. So it cost $13.00. Compare that with "buying" a 2-day rentalvia DIVX of BLADE RUNNER for, say $4.75 at Circuit City (assuming thesame movie is available on DIVX). So by only paying $13.00-$4.75=$8.25more tthan the 2-day DIVX rental I NOW OWN THE MOVIE and can watch itan unlimited number of times without having to pay another rental feeor having to convert it to "silver" status (assuming it is"silverable"). Plus I can play it on a friend's or relative's DVDplayer since it is not licensed to play only on a limited number ofmachines. DVD TO DIVX : Ouch, the more I think about this comparison, I wonder, who thought upthis DIVX scheme in the first place? Maybe when CC ran the numbersinitially they were not counting on such a strong "sell through"market developing for DVD so early on and were assuming that standardDVD would not take off the way it has and more people would be willingto put up with DIVX "gotchas" such as phone line, unsilverable movies,repeat charges, and machine specific licensing. Just goes to show thattechnology moves very very fast.1) But if *nobody* buys DIVX, then there won't be movies only comingout on DIVX, since it won't be worth the bother.Since some people bought DVD players before there was a DIVX, it is atleast in their interest that others avoid DIVX now.2) There are movies out on DIVX that aren't on DVD, but these moviesare also available in VHS. DVD TO DIVX : Renting VHS is cheaper than a DIVX "rental", and you're not missingout on anything: almost no DIVX disks have the letterbox option (sofar, Titanic is the only exception I know of), and DIVX uses awatermarking scheme which is said to degrade picture quality.3) And you don't have to give your credit card number to a companythat also has this box in your house hooked up to your telephone line.4) In addition to costing $100 or less, the extra DIVX circuitry inyour DVD and DIVX player consumes electricity, gets warm, and isanother point of failure. (Not, of course, a big deal in these days ofsolid-state electronics.)Basically, it is true that all you personally have to lose is $100,but if DIVX succeeds, we've *all* lost a lot because we will be livingin a world where home entertainment is closely controlled.Of course, that means not just not buying DIVX. How about rememberingto vote against any representatives who voted for the DigitalMillenium Copyright Act?
