DOWNLOAD AVI : 3) Install vfw-11-utilites (be sure you read the README!!, you mustdrag the AVI extension to your extentions folder.).avi : do these steps : (BTW - I DL from my newsreader, Nuntius,not Netscape)1) Downloaded source file. "Save" them. Multi-part files may needto be renamed slightly after each DL to avoid the "Replace?" dialogwhen saving. Don't mess with the suffix, put a 1 or 2 at thebeginning of the file name.2a) For one part files, decode with MPack by dragging it to theMpack icon and dropping. It will say "Saving part 1 of 1", whencompleted it will say "Found file...:, click save. 2b) For multi-part files use UUundo or UULite, the process isautomatic after you drag the file and drop it on the icon.3) Convert the AVI to QT by dragging the decoded file ONTO theavi-qt utility. You will have the option of then making a stand alone file or one dependant on the AVI file. Either way works but you willhave to keep the associated files if you go the dependent route. Best bet = standalone, you'll be using the disk space one way oranother, this way you only have to keep track of one file. If itwas an .mpeg file, no need to do this step, after the MPack decodeyou should see a Sparkle/Mpeg icon ready for double clicking. Oncein a while the icon doesn't change, it looks like the MPack icon, itmay be a decoded .mpeg, drag it to the Sparkle icon instead ofdouble clicking. I don't know why this happens sometimes but...... DOWNLOAD AVI : 4) Double click the .mpeg or .avi and it will play. NOTE : some avifiles are compressed using the new Indeo IV4.1, this is notavailable for Mac yet, you will not be able to view those files. Also, some mpegs have a new sound type and you can't view those on aMac yet either.........------------------------- ---------------------------------------- -----------.gl files work the same way. You do everything as above, exceptafter the MPack decode, drag and drop it on an app called "GLMacAnimView 1.1" the folder it comes in is called "MAV_1.1_Only Folder". Set the memory partition of this app to 2M. set your browser to - macanimviewer1.1.cpt.hqx (379438) is the file you want.----------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- -Basic non-Base 64 .jpeg files should be opened in Nuntius so you cansee the binaries. Simply do "Extract Binaries" from the file menu.Drag to JPEG View.To view multi part .jpegs or Base 64 .jpegs, do as above, DL (Savethem, not extract), UUundo decode them and view with JPEG View.(there is an extension with JPEG View also) ---------------------------------------- ------------------------------------.zip files : Download them all to your desktop. For single partfiles do the MPack decode, drag it to MPack, then drag and drop theoctet stream this created onto Stuffit Expander. (This is a updatedversion, the Stuffit Engine extension, v. 3.5.2, does the work. setyour browser to - StuffIt_Expander_3.5.2_Install.hqx (189965) is the file you want.) If the file is an .avi, drag and drop on .avi->quicktime utility. DOWNLOAD AVI : You probably can't fix this problem for most avi's on here since aol'sability to gather complete posts for it's filegrabber utility has gone to totalshit lately. If filegrabber doesn't show up when you click on a binary (pic or movie),it means all of its parts have not showed up on the aohell newsserver yet, (andprobably won't). To compound its inherent problems, aohelll recently altered its newsgroupaccessibility functions without notifying anyone. (If you can afford it, you should subscribe to a news service like newsguyor remarq ... any other favorites, guys? ... which will provide you withcomplete posts of most binaries which you then can download from aol ... thisis a presumption since it's how it works for other isp's.) For the few complete posts that do get through, you should change some ofyour options as follows to be able to get what's there: DOWNLOAD AVI : On your "Newsgroups" window, go to "Set Preferences." A window called"Global Network Preferences" will appear. Click the "Filtering" tab. Make sure the boxes marked "Binaries posted to non-binary newsgroups" and"Messages longer than ____ characters" are BOTH unchecked. Now go to "Read My Newsgroups." Highlight afcc and click "Preferences." The box appearing will be the preferences for the individual ng. Makesure the boxes that say "Hide binary files" and "Don't show me messages morethan ____ characters" are BOTH unchecked. I also recommend you set the "Showmessages no more than ____ days old" window to 30 (the maximum). You shouldalso perform this step for any other ng you subscribe to that features binaryfiles. AOL had been doing a better than usual job of getting all parts to postsof avi's, mpg's, etc., which is a must for the filegrabber system to work. However, recently it's again gone to shit. At least jpg's and gif's areno problem. Hope this info helps ... If itdoesn't, let me know. DOWNLOAD AVI : I download a few avi file from newsgroup which I can't view. I know it isthe right codec, doc said it is div 3.2 codec but it is say the format isnot support. The movie was cut to little piece for newsgroup. Any .avi filesthat are downloaded incomplete cannot be played over. You must downloadthe full .avi file not split in parts or anything in order for it to play...mpg files seem to work much better as you can download them in parts andfew even though they are incomplete, and later even combine them.
