DIVX PLAYERS : Not if they have to open an account, with a credit card. Many of this people might have rental shops near by and prefer renting. And last don't forget that divx has an incredibly high return rate, probablydue to the lies used to sell divx. When CC said 87000 divx players sold, with almost 60000 sold in December itcould actually mean 52000 in December, apply the same to the prior months andthe real number of divx players is around 69000."If" this is true, and a 1 divx player in 3 has been returned, the number goesdown to 46000.Supposedly CC employees had a big discount and they account for over 40000 of the players sold, that leaves only 6000players sold to costumers.Rumor is that many CC employees got the divx player only because it was reallycheap, they really use them as DVD players, don't forget they can get DVDmovies really cheap. DIVX PLAYERS : True (although it should be pointed out to the original poster that only threecompanies actually make Divx players -- Zenith, Thomson, and Panasonic). Notmuch of a selection.Actually, it is dishonest of you to compare the $4.49 + tax price of a Divx disc to the "heft price of a DVD".For Divx's $4.49 + tax you get a single 48 hour rental period. DVD rental ischeaper than that, and it gives you all the hefty features you have come toexpect from DVD.To "silver" upgrade a Divx disc is almost always more expensive than just buyingthe DVD in the first place (not to mention the pitfalls of never owning the movieand not being able to play it for free on other people's players).Divx is the system that appears to carry the hefty price. More expensiveplayers. More expensive rentals. More expensive "ownership". You pay more andget less. DIVX PLAYERS : I was wondering: has anyone noticed vibration or noise problems withtheir Thomson DiVX players (ProScan PS8680Z or RCA RC-5230Z and RC-5231Z)? I bought a ProScan plus one open DVD (L.A. Story) and the 5 "free" DiVXdiscs at Circuit City. I chose the ProScan because of the superior image, component video output, and DiVX (no flames, please - that's for anotherthread). After testing with the open DVD, I selected one DiVX to watch.Wouldn't play - it couldn't read anything and put up an error message. Tocheck for a bad disc, I popped the other 4 DiVX discs in to see if theycould load. Note that the initial reading (w/hardware play button) willnot start the rental period - only after you select "Play movie" on thescreen. Two of the four discs made some noise (a low hum), like the discwas off-center and vibrating. It was pretty quiet, but I could hear it 10feet away in a quiet room. I could *certainly* feel it by holding theplayer. I called DiVX, they agreed the dead one was a bad disc, and sent anew on free of charge, as they should (it played OK). DIVX PLAYERS : I went back to CC to return the player, vibrating discs in hand. Beforebeing accosted by a salesperson, I tried the other players they had on theshelf. Lo and behold, their demo ProScan also vibrated. And so did the twoRCA models! The Panasonic and Zenith DiVX players did not vibrate, nor didthe non-DiVX players (not sure if they even spun the discs). To me, thissuggests an inherent design flaw, perhaps in tracking, isolation, orvibration control. Then a salesperson arrived and started a spiel aboutthem being bad discs. His logic was flawed, IMHO. They were out of the ProScan and could not swap for a new one (thismodel is hugely popular), but offered the Panasonic X410 plus a set ofMonster Cables for my trouble. I'd heard of freezing and other problemswith the Panasonic, and it doesn't have component video output (my TV hasc.v. inputs), so I got them to note my visit and extend the return policyto sort this out. DIVX PLAYERS : I called Thomson Consumer Electronics, and despite a friendly technicalsupport person, was unable to find out more. I told them I was calling toalert them about an inherent design flaw, to which he said no problems hadyet been reported, and they didn't have a method of logging my report(rather circular, eh?). He also said he couldn't bump a report up the linefor investigation, and said that the best way to get this noticed wasthrough the store and local Thomson representative. He suggested I returnthe player and try my vibrating discs on players until I find one thatworks OK. I'll go through their entire stock, until I find one and/or theyget so annoyed they give me satisfaction. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any news on the ProScanPS8800Z being released yet? BTW, I also was interested in the ProScan audio specs, in order tocompare to other players. They weren't easy to find, but I found that theaudio is indeed 24-bit/96kHz, although they list the S/N ratio as ">95dB", while the Panasonic lists something like 115 dB. The player had asticker announcing 10-bit video DACs, which seem to be the norm onrecently-introduced players. The Thomson non-DiVX players are made in Asiaby Matsushita, as are the Panasonic players, but the Thomson DiVX playersare made "in-house" in Mexico. FYI
