DIVX MAC : So, to the search for DivX for Macintosh. I entered "divx macintosh" in Google and came up with at least ten pages of references. Here are the first four working references...I visited each page and downloaded the associated software. I stuck each set of downloads in its own folder, and then went back to try them one by one. I also needed some media to test it with, which meant I had to first go get some Divx movies. Back to Google for more searches. (It used to be with browsers that you could just type "googe" and it would add www. and .com appropriately. Now that takes forever. What's going on?) So I search for DivX Movies in Google. Divx Crawler looks promising ... except for a stupid fucking Java error on a porno advertising site. Now it keeps popping up nasty slutty images, so I'm not even going to investigate what it's got to offer. DivX Crawler, because of all the porno popups, I am never returning to your site. FOAD. DIVX MAC : Digital Digest: They have some trailers intended to show off the flexibility of the format. The first trailer I came to was the Three Kings trailer, so I downloaded it. Hey, my DSL is cranking along at 155kB/sec. Cool. Now if DivX is such an amazing file format, why does this site try to further compress the file in zip format? It contains three files... a1q5ie11.zip: 26.2MBa1q5ie11 folder: 26.6MBThree Kings - Trailer.avi: 26.4MB Hmmm. I didn't know that divx used the avi extension. Doubleclick on it and the Windows Media player opens, but says it's not a recognized file format. That's to be expected if it really is a different format. Say, if DivX is so amazingly cool, why can't it embed some text instead of having to pack the text files in a zip archive? Oh! Here's ain interesting one... Star Trek: First First Contact - Trailer! But the illustration is for the South Park movie. Come on, folks, you should do better QA than that. Haha! This link takes me to the trailer in Spanish! And it's embedded, so QuickTime tried to open it. Try the other link for the trailer ... and now I get half a dozen more windows to advertize porno sites. I get tired of closing the windows one by one, so I just kill the browser. So far, my DivX experience has been an exercize in frustration at all the fucking porno crap associated with the sites that have movies. If I'm going to get assaulted by this every time I look for movies, then I don't want any. These DivX collections sites are generally links to more DivX collections sites. It seems to take two or three clickthroughs to actually get to the movie you're trying to find. And many of them have sleazy porno advertisers. DIVX MAC : (I suspect that the real reason we need an operating system that won't crash when an individual allication crashes is to protect us from all the porno sites that inundate the browser with a dozen or more filthy windows.) DivXToday.com lists eighteen movies, but only six of them are actual links. Is this stupid? And the link to the HIghlander movie results in what looks like a broken and incompletely downloaded web page. Okay, let's try the Galaxy Quest trailer. File not found. Apollo 13. File not found. Matrix? File not found. WTF? If I have to work this hard just to find media to test my DivX installation with, what good is the format? Well, I got two DivX movies, the official DivX demo movie and a trailer for Three Kings. Maybe that will be enough to test the codecs and players. DIVX MAC : 1. "Requires Microsoft Media Player 6.3. I already have the Windows Media Player version 7.0.1.0307. So this player is hosed to start with. I'm going to write the author to ask him the point of creating an piece of writing "open software" that only runs with a defunct piece of proprietary software. But I guess he doesn't actually want to hear from anyone because his ReadMe file has no contact information. Back to the web site... the REadMe says it's , so let's go there. Interestingly, the home page says to check out 3ivx. It keeps popping up some smaller window that I have to keep dismissing. Let's check the forum. There's a Mac section... DIVX MAC : A success story has these instructions... 1. Windows Media Player 6.3 (not! 7!!!)2. Divx Player3. Anyway, reading the Mac forum gained me some tidbits of information...€ The type code has to be MP43. € Get the FourCC code changer from € MPG4 fourcc is for MPEG4v1 codec, which is different to MPEG4v3, aka Divx€ screen depth needs to be 16 bits€ wmp 6.7 can be downloaded from Aha! Let's try that one. So now I have WMP 6.7. The DivX Player 1.0B10 plays the DivX_logo_02.avi file, once you change its type with the Movie Filetye Fixer that came with it. The FileTyper changed the type to Quicktime AVI. So you launch the DivX Player and it launches the Windows Media Player. Then you can open the DivX movies. The DivX logo movie plays, but there's no sound. The Three Kings trailer plays, but the video is all white and the sound is choppy. Can QuickTime play it with the OpenDivX codec? Nope. It complains that it can't recognize the format.
