DIVX AVI : I did go to the ATI site and made the request for the new drivers CD. Theyacknowledged my request with an email, saying the cd will be shipped to meon October 5, 2000. I hope that's true.Hi RC,I am using Windows 98, and NOT the 2nd edition.Thank-You.MarkHello RC,Yes, this is the MPEG4 format.Any thoughts on how I can capture TV directly to MPEG4 using the DivX;)codecs?Auctionimage.com-Picturethiss.comMark & Susan RajchelP.O. Box 2026Cleona, Pennsylvania 17042In article , says...You need to use a third party software capture program. The ATI MMC will not accept anything other than what it has. It's only meant to use it's internal codecs. Get a capture program like AVI_IO, Virtual Dub, or just about "any" other third party capture program. In them you can select your capture "device" (the ATI card) Then the source (ATI TV, composite or S-video input) and for the "codec" you would find an option for "compression". There you should see all the codecs you have installed including the DivX etc. I use AVI_IO myself mainly to get around the 2 GB Windows AVI file size limitation when doing long captures. With my ATI 128 32mb card I have DiVx, plus the "original" Microsoft Mpeg-4 (all three versions), plus the Huyffy loss less codec, and the PicVideo Mjpeg and Morgan's Jpeg and several others. Once you go to a third party capture program you'll open up a lot of options that you can use with that ATI card. AVI_IO also now has built in a "scheduler" that works with the ATI card TV tuner so you can program several capture events at different days, times and duration. You can get a "trial" version of it at my web site. Virtual Dub is also very highly recommended as it has a lot of powerful editing features. DIVX AVI : Thanks for that info. I am checking your site now, and I am checking mysettings in Virtual Dub. I will let you know how I make out.Auctionimage.com-Picturethiss.comMark & Susan RajchelP.O. Box 2026Cleona, Pennsylvania 17042ShowShifter is free software that is basically a Tivo like systemwhich can use any VfW VCM codec (e.g. MPEG4, Divx, MJPEG).It also supports DVD and MP3 and has a UI designed to be easilyused with an IR remote at a distance from the screen. You can do it using virtual dub, capture using compressed mode, andselect the divx ;-) codec.Be careful, you must install this codec AFTER all other software(micro$oft software seems to hate this codec ;-) )But even with my PIII667, I cannot do better than CIF resolution(352*280 or something like that), and when there is a lot of movementsin the video, you will loose frames :-(When capturing with Virtual Dub (great proggie ;-) ) you got a metershowing the use of CPU. It's OK for low motion scenes, but horrible forfast motion scenes....So I prefer to capture in mpeg1 with a high data rate at 640*480, andthen convert to divx (at something like 12 fps) to put one and an halfhour of video on a single CD....--Stef11ROriginal Gixxer DIVX AVI : is there a dvd player on the market that can play divx, avi, xvid etc?On Sun, 9 Nov 2003 13:41:25 +0100, "beef & onion crisps" typed:There are a few DVD players that can play Divx 5 but it's rather few.Go to thanx for the tip. im interested in buying a standalone dvd player that canplay many different types of file. i mean like - .avi, .divx, xvid and soon. we have a ton of movies that we took of our little boy in his firstmonths, but i have had problems trying to figure out the best encoding, sowe have a whole bunch of different formats. i dont want to convert them intosvcd or vcd or whatever because we loose a lot of quality and it takes toolong.the players that i have seen take xvid and divx, but are they different froma normal .avi files?and what happens if the file is encoded with vidomi or an earlier vesion ofxvid, or uses angelpotion codecs? will they still play on these standaloneplayers?and finally - maybe most importaint - is it possible to "download" newcodecs onto the player so that if a new codec comes out, it can be used onthe player.forgive my ignorance, i know very little about standalone dvd players and agoogle search just returns a whole bunch of stores trying to sell mesomething i dont need.anyone in the know, please advise me. should i wait, or is there somethingout there that can do these things already. DIVX AVI : Something so precious, why not make them DVD? :) I saw an ad for a burnerfor $120 after rebates in store, some you can buy on-line for that priceflat-out :)Anyways, SVCD and VCD are quite lossy, so those are out (most DVD playerswill play VCD, and most although less will play SVCD).So, now you have the avi, divx, xvid, question. Well, DiVX and Xvid are bothMPEG-4, so you want a MPEG-4 player. You won't find it marketed like that,it will be a DiVX player, its just because more people realize that theyhave a divx file rather than they have an mpeg-4 file (mainly since thempeg-1 ends in .mpg, and mpeg-2 ends in .mpg, and mpeg-4 ends in .avi, thatthey are confused as to how it could be an mpeg-4...)Since they are basically the same thing, DiVX players (notice the small "i,"there was a DIVX player that was completly different and they failed, butnow they sometimes appear on ebay and stuff like that, so be careful [it iseasy to tell the difference, though, so dont get scared or anything]). Theywill also tell you it plays xvid, just because it is an extra marketingpoint. DIVX AVI : The part that there comes confusion from is what is the difference fromdivx/xvid and .avi? Well, the .avi isn't really a thing. It's a container. You can add in several types of video -- uncompressed, divx5, divx4, divx3,xvid, indeo, H.261, H.263 -- and several types of audio -- MP3, AC3, WAV,OGG (although doing that causes it to become an .ogm file rather than .avi),and any combination. This isnt a complete list, so there are manycombinations. So, you can see how it is rather impossible to define 'normal.avi.' Of all the combinations, only uncompressed video & wav (which isalso a bit of a container format itself, although here it means uncompressedaudio), would make up a 'normal' avi. It's a useless format, as it uses upquite a bit of space (>75MB/min, so 1 hour is going to be to over 4GB).Well, not so much useless as un-downloadable (at this time :). On a CD, youcould put about 10 minutes of that stuff before it runs out of space. But,in divx (as you well know), you can easily fit 1 hour (although for qualityreasons my encodes are about 45min-55min/CD).
