CONVERT MPG : After playing around with Graphedit, I finally figured out how toconvert an MPG to AVI (or VIV or any other codec for that matter!) Inthe question of converting the MPG to AVI....First, you gotta download the first file of the DirectX 6.0 SDK.Install just the essentials without samples. Graphedit is one ofthose tools. Run it and click the Insert Filter tab. Add thefollowing:A file sourceAn mpeg stream splitterAn mpeg video decoderAn AVI compression codec (i263 is the way to go!)An AVI mux (this is what I was missing. It joins an interleaves theaudio withe the video)And finally a file writerThe connections are simple:Input file (.mpg) -> Mpeg splitterMpeg Video out (from splitter) -> Mpeg video decoderMpeg Video decoder out -> i263 AVI compressorMpeg audio out -> AVI muxi263 out to AVI muxAVI out from mux to file write CONVERT MPG : Note that in this case, the audio stays compressed as mpeg audio. Youcould easily go to other compressed or non-compressed formats byinserting an audio decoder and codec before the mux.Ok, now I am getting SOMEWHERE at least. I did find out that is yousave a filter and the input mpg was 15 seconds long, that if you loadup the same filter and enter a 4 minute mpg, you still get ONLY 15seconds. (Way to go Microsoft!) However, I still have some problemsthat you may or may not be able to help with. I am converting mpgvideo to i263 and in these filters there seems to be no way ofdefining the quality and compression parameters for the codec. Iwould have to assume that somehow there is a default setting for thecodec that is being used. However, I've tried looking in the Settings-> Multimedia -> Video Codecs -> i263 -> Properties tab and you can'tset any options there. Do you know of any way to set thecompression/quality settings for the codecs? It's great that I havebeen able to comrpess a 40 meg MPEG to a 16 meg AVI, but I'd ratherhave a 20-24 meg AVI that looks more like the 40 meg MPG thansomething so fuzzy.... Any ideas appreciated.... CONVERT MPG : They should be compatible - if you rename your MPG to .AVI - it should runas a AVI - I don't think you can convert quality wise - a MPG is acompressed/encoded AVI - to convert it back you would have to un-compressit... and I don't think that info is there once compressed. (or encoded)that would be like trying to make a .JPG picture into it's original form ofa TIF. The stuff ain't there to put back. It' been compressed and theextra... discarded.1) *.MPG files cannot be renamed to *.AVI and be expected to behavelike an AVI file.MPG files can be decompressed and recompressed into AVI files. Howeveryou will experience a loss of quality unless the target AVI file containsuncompressed YUV data. Normally you will recompress into Indeo or someother format, and you will lose some quality. Which I suppose is what thisguy was trying to say. The quality will notmatch that of a direct conversion though since you're converting fromdigital to analogue and back to digital.There's a shareware that extract the sound from an mpg file and recordit as an mp3. It's called MPEG Player from Jiao Shanwu. Try. Youcan also cut and past the video as well as the sound.A warning though. The program isn't free. I have version 3.30 datingfrom August 1998. Registration is $20. My copy which isn't registeredis limited to 7 second clips.
