CONVERT DIVX TO : Some people swear by a tool called "mjpegtools" and there are various front-endsfor that one. It's also open source free software as is transcode and DVD::Rip.A great way to see if Linux will work for you and how easy it is to use, you candownload a "live CD" version of Suse 9 that lets you boot to the CD and run theOS off the CD without ever installing to your hard drive, and you can buy the OSin most stores or download it for free (I prefer RedHat 9 currently). So anyway, you can choose to pay to encode to mpeg-2, or you can choose to do itfor free. There are lots of options out there."Viewable quality" depends a lot on the quality of the DivX file.If you have a high quality DivX (or Xvid) file, the VCD will also be highquality (of course there's no such thing as a high quality VCD but that'sanother topic). CONVERT DIVX TO : I've archived TV shows to DivX, then later decided I wanted a VCD to playon a DVD player and the resulting VCD looked better than ones I'd madedirectly from captured DV files. If you you're running Windows, and don't mind spending a few bucks, youcan get Ulead DVD Movie Studio for the same price as a typical PC game. It's a capable program, very easy to use, and will easily convert a DivXfile to VCD and even burn the disk for you. I use it occasionally, and forwhat it is (entry level tool designed for the average consumer), it worksgreat.I took the advice of using TMPENC to convert this divx 5 .avi to mpeg1 so I could put them on a VCD.So far so good. But I receive 2 files from the same series - when Iplay them in the divx player - they are 54 minutes, when I try to useTMP}ENC to recode ethem to mpeg1 - the show up as 192 minutes!!! Andway to big to be a VCD. CONVERT DIVX TO : Is it possible to convert DivX to a DVD compliant file (MPEG2?) with minimalquality loss *and* keeping it down to a similar file size, possible an extraCD-R's worth?I have a bucketload of DivX and will get aDVD player at some point, so willwant to watch them through the DVD player and not via TV-Out on my PC.TIA,WillDivX (or any MPEG-4 codec) is used to get a really small size at the expenseofnot being able to play in DVD players. You could try converting one to MPEG-1 VCD format using TMPGEnc and watchit on your PC to see if the quality is acceptable to you. If it is thenmost DVD playerswill play VCD's using CD-RWs (but check out vcdhelp.com)Each VCD will hold 74 mins so two would probably do most movies. You could try SVCD format which plays in a smaller number of DVD players(see vcdhelp.com again) but you'd need about 3 or 4 discs/movie.So, based on this, is there a MPEG4 codec I could use other than DivX thatwould mean I get similar quality/file size and could give to friends withoutthem installing DivX first? Will CONVERT DIVX TO : I personally use the MS MPEG-4 V2 codec which is the predecessor to thehacked MS MPEG-4 V3 codec known as DivX.I assume its inferior (cause its the previous version) but it does me fineat352x576 25 fps.I use MS MPEG-4 V2 as well, but Windows Media 8 would probably be aneven better choice. Its encoding quality is slightly improved over theprevious MPEG-4 codecs, and the VBR support can really help keep thefile size low. Windows Media Encoder 7.1 supports WM 8, but you'll needto use the WM 8 Encoding Utility if you want VBR support. Both areavailable here:If you need help encoding to WM 8, you can visit my web page.On Thu, 12 Jul 2001 12:20:46 +0100, "Will Hay" wrote: No. You can easily convert it to MPEG2 with Tsunami MPEG, buta DVD compliant file with minimal quality loss will be many timeslarger than your DivX files. CONVERT DIVX TO : I've got many divx movies, and I use a tool named vidtoasf.exe to convertthem to asf format,so I can put them on my Media Server. But only some of the divx movies can be convert to asf, others always failed. If you are talking about the DivX codec, this is an unsupported, pirated, hacked "warez" codec. Microsoft does not make any software that can help you with this.--------------------From: Subject: How to convert Divx to ASF?Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 11:43:16 +0800Lines: 10X-Priority: 3X-MSMail-Priority: NormalX-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200Message-ID: Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsmedia.encoderNNT P-Posting-Host: 61.156.108.16Path: cppssbbsa01.microsoft.com!tkmsftngp01!tk msftngp03Xref: cppssbbsa01.microsoft.com microsoft.public.windowsmedia.encoder:35 67X-Tomcat-NG: microsoft.public.windowsmedia.encoderI've got many divx movies, and I use a tool named vidtoasf.exe to convertthem to asf format,so I can put them on my Media Server. But only some of the divx movies can be convert to asf, others always failed. This posting is provided “AS IS” with no warranties, and confers no rights.
