AVI PLAYER : ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Team OS/2 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, '''''''''''''''''''' Bye BYe BYle BYLe BYLee BYLEe BYLEE '''''''''''''''''''Someone wrote an add-on to Warp's MM player that allows it to read Windows-format (Intel codec) AVI files. I'm trying it out right now.Not great, but it works. I'm having some problems with sound rightnow. The file name is apmsvc1.zip and I grabbed it off of hobbes, under the Warp directory somewhere. In article (Scott Zabolotzky) writes:I heard it was also at in /pub/os2/incomingThe AVI player is good, the compression format is unsupported *out of the box*.Try to locate the file APMSVC1.ZIP on hobbes (ftp-os2.cdrom.com/pub/os2/..?)this is a 20k file which makes it possible to view the MSW AVI's under OS/2.I found it on HOBBES.NMSU.EDU in os2/warp/sysutils directory.APMSVC1.ZIP that is.The problem you're having is that those are Video for Windows format AVI's. Microsoft being the scum they are, refuse to release the format to the public thus making sure only they and licensed companies can write software to it. However UltiMotion (IBM's form of AVI) is far superior and is an OPEN standard!. There is a add-on to MMPM/2 called something like APMSV1.ZIP that adds VFW support to OS/2. AVI PLAYER : since several people kindly asked me wether they could get a copy of AVIplayer, I put it on my web page :or directly by ftp :NOTE : I am not the author of this app. I don't remember where I getthis file from. I am not sure if the author would like that this app tobe downloaded. Just let me know.In any case, remember that this app is a PREVIEW and it may work onlyuntil the 30 october 1997 !!!I didn't check the URL, but I am sure you are all talking about the AVI-Player I wrote. It is the only one I know of :-)Actually, I am kind of wondering about this late interest. The programm is around for several years and I can count the comments on one, maybe two, hands. One reason might be, that the email address I gave broke shortly after I released the programm, but even in the newsgroups was nothing. AVI PLAYER : - There is a newer version of the player. A few reasons, why it is not available, yet: * it is not ready :-) * it doesn't support more AVI formats (see below) * it is difficult/impossible to find supported AVI files * GEOS is not well suited for this amount of data per time * The GEOS 2.0 videodrivers had bug in high-color modes- The problem with the AVI formats. AVI files contain compressed data. The compression used change over time. The most used formats now are Intel Indeo and Cinepak compression formats. Both are propritary formats and there is no public description of the compression format. It is possible to buy a licence, but the last time we checked, it was several thousand dollar. A bit too expensive. So I only implemented the compression format where I could find informations about. Of course this format does not compress well and therefore is not used anymore. AVI PLAYER : My conclusion was, that the AVI-Player is not really useful right now, because there are no videos to play. So I never released a new version. Is there really an interest for the old restricted AVI-Player? Maybe amable to dig it out.PS: I don't care if it is possible to download the preview of the AVI-Player it is very outdated and restricted. Just don't advertise it as AVI-Player. It can not do what people would expect. It looks like I made some mistakes configuring my news client. You can reach me at this email: Sorry for this.Hi All,Is there an old Window / DOS AVI Animation Maker around that I can downloadthat support the GEOS AVI Player limitations?I can develop FLI files for the GEOS FLI Player v1.0 - by exporting each frameout of NewDraw; then import each frame into AniMagician in DOS.Oh well, some of my FLI's are on AOL Mulimedia Forum for downloading. AVI PLAYER : Gerd I would have to agree. I had the AVI player some time ago and it is as yousay. Thanks for the info. I agree you don't want to get folks expectations up.The AVI player is very limited if not worthless as you stated in your post.I would like your opinion though if there EVER could be a decent AVI player forGEOS as GEOS is now. I tend to doubt that there ever could be as it wouldpretty much crash GEOS. Your thoughts?I tested it by adjusting the clock to 1997 on my PC and it ran thesupplied bear AVI under NDO98 rel 3. Yes, it did crash. I do wish adecent AVI player could be developed. There's already a FLI player, which reminds me, can anyone send me a small FLI file so that I can testthe FLI player?I've finished running the AVI program by moving back my system clock to 1990and then running the program, first using the animated bear and then by runningone of the Windows AVIs that come with Multimedia (a gimmed CD-ROM when CDsfirst came out years back). It ran both pretty well...I couldn't get thecolors working on the Win stuff because at that time, I was only set up for 16colors).
