I can have an AVI movie that uses Indeo, or Cinepak, or RLE, other compression/encoding system. So when you say AVI you must know what "flavor" of AVI you are talking about.I do not have any special hardware support and I can play Indeo RAW, Indeo 3.2, Cinepak, Video 1, and RLE version of AVI. All I need to do is to install the proper drivers into Windows. I also have QT. AVI MOVIE : A benchmark would be hard to do well. First you must start with a raw image. (Converting an AVI to a QT, or QT to AVI, is not a fair test). Then encode into QT and AVI (several favors) and do the benchmark looking at both performance *and* quality. That is the problem. Three different programs, all set to 65% image quality, will give you three different sized files of three different qualities. A 65% image in Indeo is different than 65% Cinepak and this is different than 65% Video 1. Generally speaking, I have seen no advantage of QT over AVI, or AVI over QT. But that is strictly seat of the pants feeling. I'm sure someone will disagree. :-) If I'm producing something for a PC I use AVI. If I'm making something for the Mac I use QT. AVI MOVIE : The subject line above may sound a little vague, so let me describe thismore accurately.I'm working with a two-minute movie. Several audio clips of acousticpiano have reverb and equalization added, and some are reversed (for"backwards" sound). They sound fine when played from the time orexported to video.HOWEVER, when I export to movie to create an .avi file, and then I playthat file back in Windows Media Player 6.4.05.0809 (or in Premiere), Ihear a clicking--either clipping and/or distortion--sound on (only) thepiano parts with those effects added (apprx. 4 clicks a second, alwaysat a rhythmic interval). It sounds godawful, btw.Two things worth mentioning: although the sound on my computer is great,and I can play music CDs on the CD-ROM and they sound letter perfect,whenever I pop in a music software program with audio clips or an"enhanced" audio disc to play music clips embedded in a softwareinterface (say, King Crimson, because they put their Discipline MusicCatalog on a disc occasionally with small music clips from albumsaccompanying graphics), I have heard the same clipping! (Because it wasso rhythmic, I always thought the CD had a scratch--only with Premiereexport to movie, there's no disc spinning.) Also worth mentioning, Ihave Sound Blaster Pro Emulation turned off in the properties of mysound card (TBS Montego II). AVI MOVIE : I figure there's some relation between the exported .avi movie, theCrimson interactive CDs, and the music software CDs with audio demos allhaving the same clicking (whereas I've never heard such clicking whenworking in Premiere via the timeline and monitor window with all sortsof sound files and audio effects).Whew! Thorny problem, I know, but I sure would appreciate somefeedback. My Premiere (editing) system has been so good to me for solong (aside from a few crashes per nightly session) that it's rathersurprising to hit a snag again.
