Win2k as an OS, can handle the large files, but only if the partition is formatted as NTFS. FAT32 will only allow 4gb files. If you are running into a limit at 2gb it is probably the application that cannot handle it. I have just captured 5 whole miniDV tapes of 62 minutes each to single files of just over 13gb with no file size issues. AVI FILES : The 2GB file limitation is part of the standard AVI format, and is not really OSrelated. You would need something to overcome that limitation in the form of adriver or an extension or the like - sort of like the Canopus software does. Idon't believe that Premiere 5.1 supports >2Gb AVI files on its own.But there is a newer standard for AVI files that Premier 5.1 may not support. I forget the exact designation, but I seem to recall many people having trouble editing AVI files with Premier 5.1 that were captured with newer hardware/software. I remember numbers of 1 and 2 but not the prefix. Premier 5.1 only supports the older standard. You probably have to go to Premier 6 to support the new one. Also, in between most capture cards with associated software "extended" the AVI standard to go beyond 2gb. So then you run into the FAT32 limit of 4gb, which buys you another 9 minutes, but not the whole hour. AVI FILES : Now I am capturing and editing movies built from up to 8 13gb AVI files on Win2k/NTFS/StudioDV. I do not consider myself a professional or even talented amateur. I am just a computer guy with a bunch of home movies to work on. One of these days I aspire to move up to an RT2000/DV500/Raptor level, but there was no point until they all supported Win2k/NTFS/very large files without proprietary stitching mechanisms. Because who knows what shareware/freeware tools I may want to use alongside the standard stuff.I am very close on the hardware/OS side. 160gb RAID-0 array using inexpensive controller and hard drives cost me under US$500 for DV data. Win2k with NTFS and supported auxiliary hardware: sound card, IEEE-1394 card, quality 2-D video card, and network card. UDMA-66/100 7200rpm drives for OS and temporary space. 256mb of memory, with room for more if I ever see a need. Buy memory now while it is cheap. AVI FILES : This is all pretty new and I still have some fine tuning to do. I may also find that my PIII-667 is barely or even not quite up to the task. But the basic hardware is in place and I can begin to save up for that higher-end package.[This followup was posted to rec.video and a copy was sent to the cited author.] I'm not certain about the AVI format itself, but all versions of FAT are limited to 4G file sizes. This is due to the 32-bit value used to hold the file size. The only option is to either switch to a Mac, or move to NT or Win2K using the NTFS file system. Or wait for WinXP, and use NTFS with that.I'm running Windows 2000 SP1 + Premiere 6.01 and store things on Ntfs.Whether it is FAT vs NTFS or Windows2000 vs Win9x/Me it doesn't matter tome.I have no problem with .avi files being bigger than 4G. With what I'm doing,it's kinda hard NOT having files that big.
