AVI CODEC : Why are you recompressing at all? Stay with the dv codec -- you can generate an avi file from the dv codec, same as you can generate an mov file or even a .dv file -- all three file 'formats' are identical but for some housekeeping and wrapper variations.Anytime you compress to a new codec you are asking for trouble, so save it for the last step & work with the 'source' format until then.In article , says...Thanks for the info! Do you have a suggestion for an AVI codec when I want to convert VOB files from ripped DVDs??No, sorry that isn't a path I've ever pursued. I assumed the ripped DVDs came out as MPEG-2 files, and if so would again suggest you stay with the source format. If you have to use a particular player, and that player can't use the correct codec, then you'll have to review your output codec -- but recognize that recompressing a big file, even with a fast & properly tweaked computer can easily run you five or six times file 'length' -- overnight to generata a DiVX file from a ripped DVD seems an ordinary (that is good) time, if I read posts here correctly.

AVI CODEC : If he's editing, I would recommend doing repeated edits in MPEG-2. Thegeneration loss is high. Not sure what the best alternative would be though.I assume you mean recommend _against_, but note that most edit systems only recompress the material actually covered by the new transition or effect -- you won't actually go down a generation at all if you are doing cuts only, and you won't go down a generation on the non-effect material -- in practice invisible except for the most complex of dissolve/layer/title sequences. This is complicated somewhat in MPEG2 files that take advantage of temporal compression, as you may have to generate a frame or two that weren't fully preserved in your data stream.I think, in case of MPEG2, even straight cuts involve recompressing,at least between the key frames prior and following to the cut point.Doubtless, though I think this is less troublesome than might be assumed. Note too that many MPEG2 use profiles ignore the temporal compression altogether -- this is certainly the case with edit systems that use MPEG2 as the compression codec.

AVI CODEC : Which is the best avi codec to use and why? I convert avi to mpeg2.The best codec to use is uncompressed, that way there is not artifactingfrom compression. The only problem is that file sizes are a little big, and there is a 2Giglimit for some situations under Windows98.That is not an issue with Win2000.as uncompressed is way to huge - I'd go with a motionjpeg based avi-codecfor minimal loss of quality. An example would be picvideo mjpeg codec, orany customizable dv-codec...I've had some impressive results with MS windows free media encodingutility. Spits out a very clean very small file sized .wmv. Huff-YUV is actually superior to the motion JPEG codecs I've looked at, is non-lossy, and totally free... Iy actually has two compression modes, "non lossy" and "slightly lossy", which is doing a colorspace conversion, so you can never get the original colorspace back, but it compresses far better than the other mode, and most lossy formats such as MPEG or MPEG-2 are using YUV-12 colorspace anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

AVI CODEC : "slightly lossy" in this case is reffering to the colorspace conversion, not lossy compression like with JPEG.. And as you're just converting it to the colorspace that MPEG already uses, it's irrelevant. (it *does* compress the data, but it's non-lossy achivial compression, like you'd use with zip or arj)In case any one is interested in trying out the codec, this is a link tothe author's homepage :But as i can understand "uncompressed" is not CODEC :)))IMHO best codec for desktop/home use is DiviX or MPEG4 (almoust the samething) - due smal file size and very good quality.Well, techincally I guess uncompressed is not a codec, but since it islisted with the other "codecs" I figured he was asking which wasbest to use. He did say that he converts AVI to mpeg2, So I would assume he would notwant to go through 2 compression passesto get there.

AVI CODEC : When I'm making avi's (insert rant about Apple not making a Qucktime API forWindows) I get a pull-down of about 15 different avi codecs. But when I useone, it'll playback on a few Win machines, but not all. I use another it'llplay only on my machine... I'll use another and I can't even play it back...What compressor should I use to make sure that most people can view it?(I seem to be having pretty good luck with Intel interactive, but I hate theway it compresses, and Premier can't open it... )From: ()Subject: Re: What is the "Right" AVI codec? Newsgroups: Date: 1997/12/02 Everyone has Cinepak codec, even Mac.DuaneSteven Hoefer wrote in message ...The "right" AVI codec is the one that fits the job. OK, no help. With LW,the codec with the "good enough" image quality, "good enough" playbackspeed, and "good enough" playback compatibility is the Cinepak. However, this will alias quite a bit if there is a lot of change from frame to frame. The Intel Interactive is much better in terms of image quality, playbackspeed and compression, but it requires it to be installed at some point, asit was not an included Windows AVI codec until recently (or with theinstallation of IE4). Plus it needs a pretty fast machine (120MHz plus) andfast hard drive to playback without skipping frames. Oh yeah, another trait of AVI which varies from codec to codec, whetherand how many frames it skips during playback when the hard drive can't keepup.Steven Hoefer wrote in message ...
