AVI 2 : I originally posted the question and Windows Media Player 7 does play thefile on a Windows ME/2000 systems. But, I sent one of the files over to abuddy of mine and he only has realplayer installed which needed an mpeg.I'll take a look for conversion utility for the media player.is the location of an encoder app.. converts the file to windows mediafile.. still not what I am after though...I downloaded Media Player 7 on my Windows 98 system but it wouldn't play theToshiba avi. MP searches for a decoder on MS's site and it doesn't find any.I'll try it again in a couple of days but even the Toshiba tech support toldme that only QuickTime can play them (not that it's the definitive answer).Don't know how my MP7 does it then...? It plays them on ME & 2000... mightbe the newer OS's?On Sun, 24 Dec 2000 09:19:39 -0800, "S. L. I remember reading that one wasavailable and have searched my mag collection without success!I am trying to edit a 3 camera wedding video shoot ( yeah, I know, but weall do favours for friends, don't we!) with total of 6hrs of footage.I'm using Premiere on Win 98 with Miro DC20 Plus capture card.P.C. is Gigabyte BE6 M Board, Plll 500, 256 meg RAM, C: drive is Quantum KA9.1, video drives are 2 x KX 27.3s, all DMA 66. Thanks ... but I am currently trying to sort out some "back and forth" comments I'm having in another News Group on the same subject. A fellow on the ATI News Group reports he is able to capture any size AVI (he has done 7 plus GB) with Windows 2000. Huh? He says he has tested with both AVI and Mpeg captures up to his limited available hard drive space (about 7 GB) and the files capture fine AND play back fine. IF this is true, it kind of blows the lid off the 2/4 GB file limitation being an AVI file type problem. I asked him for more details as he was rather vague so I'm hoping to find out exactly how he did this and with what equipment and software. I also asked him what editing program will work in Win2K and also support the 2gb plus files ?? AVI 2 : You can follow the thread at "alt.comp.periphs.videocards.ati&qu ot;. Search for the subject " Fix for AVI 2 gig limit? " Personally I think he may be misinterpreting his data but who knows? OPPS ... Sorry I referenced the wrong subject .. (got my News groups mixed up ) In the ati discussion you want to search for the subject:"AIW 128 16 capturing large files with NTFS on Win2K"So you mean you haven't read Avery Lee's technical explanation onthe subject? Go read it now:The guy in the ATI ng must have been using NTFS and OpenDML AVI files.Sure I read it. But the guy in the ATI news group supposedly is not using OpenDML "and" using the ATI MMC in Win2K that most everyone else can't get to work with "any" type of capture. I'm waiting his response to my query for a detailed explanation. AVI 2 : My point is that the ATI card he is talking about does not support the multimedia ATI software (for capturing etc.) in Windows NT and the newly released Win2K drivers are problematical at best. I do not believe the ATI software supports OpenDML in any of the ATI driver flavors. I'm only assuming some things because as I said earlier he was very vague about just how he was doing this. In other words he says, he just installed the video card and Win2k and now can capture muli-gigabytes of AVI files. Now IF the new Win2K ATI drivers and capture software DOES support OpenDML .... well zowie ... I'll be back as soon as I install a Win2K system to test this. That will mean the ATI All In Wonder 128 card (and it's supposedly OpenDML compatible software) would be pretty good deal for capturing 20 - 30 - 40 plus gigabyte AVI and Mpeg files. Wow, good thing I just upped my RAID array to 40 GB. Oh rats .. of course now I'll probably find that the Promise Fastrack Raid controller isn't supported in Win2K .... Arrrghhhhh.
